The Namibian coastal mining industry is largely focussed on diamond mining in the south of the country. Salt production areas are also included in this layer.

Purpose
This layer is a spatial representation of diamond mining and salt production. It was created for the BCC Spatial Biodiversity Assessment and Spatial Management, including Marine Protected Areas project.

Data Quality
Maps of mining activities generated by Vera De Cauwer as part of the BCLME Physical mapping project was the base data source. The data are treated in a binary manner, where 5' grid cells containing either mining or salt production are coded with a 1, and where these activities are absent, it is coded as 0.
