Abstract
Territorial waters, in international law, is the area of the sea immediately adjacent to the shores of a state and subject to the territorial jurisdiction of that state. With the negotiation of the 1982 United Nations Law of the Sea Convention, the allowed breadth of a territorial sea claim was extended to 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers).
